Jesse Owens

Of all the photos I have seen of Owens at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, I had never come across this one. Nuts. Photo credited to AP.
I answer that photo with this. What's up now Nazi?

I like the juxtaposition, especially since it brings to mind the farce that is the "apolitical" nature of the Olympics, which was the justification for stripping the medals from the guys we see giving the black power salute. I think that it is safe to say that the Olympics are politically about promoting stability (even Nazi stability) over liberation. Stripping of medals happens for various reasons, but Jim Thorpe and these guys are the most egregious cases of the IOC claiming that their reactionary politics are apolitical, while demanding respect as a minority is political.
(You will note, Wes, that I just talked about sports from an at least partially informed POV.)

David, I have never been in doubt as to your ability to pull an informed comment on any varied subject out of your ass like a newly formed hoot gibson. The Olympics bother me for these reasons too. How can they not be political when they are awarded on the basis of which country can demonstrate the best commitment to moving their resources towards developing a sports infrastructure which will, in theory, bring the world media spotlight temporarily to their doorstep to talk about what a wonderful country they are. Of course the Olympics will also bring with them a healthy does of political repression and a relocation of the homeless.

attempting to silence the voices in my head.
