I am fascinated by the Iphone phenomena. Here in the states people are going BatShi# over them. From Rodney Dean to Stephen Colbert people are going ga-ga. When I first read about I was excited but the whole need to get the next new thing has turned me off a little. I want to be an "early adopter" and at the forefront of the tech scene, but also people that could give a Rat's a@s about innovative technology or even need a phone are breaking their necks to get one. That being said, if I had to get a new phone...

Dr. Degrasse Tyson,
First let me state that I very much enjoyed your recent paper "Marketing the Self as an Asshole by Fake-Afro. Thoughts on Public Relations by a Celebrated Astronomer."

The advatage in me getting one is that it brings together several things I don't have and would be conveinient namely, an IPod a GPS map system and WIFI internet access.

Considering I spend two hours a day on a train and a large portion of my day at a desk with little to do, I think it come in handy.

Also, IPhones feature global roaming, and I roam globally.

That and it's shiny.

Do not get me wrong, I think they are brilliant devices and they are the coming together of several useful technologies and I think that someone in your case would find one useful. I just find the whole cell phone as status symbol craze has been amped up with the iPhone. That being said, I will probably one have one.

Now if you'll excuse I have to finish my next book. "Putting Intelligent Design in the Guillotine choke: Musings on Perfect Imperfection by an In-Your-Face MoFo" and then get a Bear wrestling a Shark Tattoed on my forehead.

what you need to do is get a burner and start paying them student loans!

Summer, I hear you. If they had burners in Japan, I would, but they are illegal here.

If the Iphone was any real difference in pricing with my current service, then I wouldn't get it. Unfortunately in Japan, a keitai (cell) is a something I can't do without. In the long run it might even save on the thngs I buy to entertain me on the train....animals, prostitutes..etc.....

I think I might have misread the article. Burners aren't illegal but they are being phased out due to their use in crimes.

Also, they aren't practicle for me here as I have 400-plus contacts in my phone. I can't go changing numbers and mail all the time. It is my only permanent number now.

i don't know about over there but here you can add minutes - my dad has had the same one for over two years. and how in the hell do you have 400 contacts? just write thm down in a mead five star. scratching & surviving!

i'm downloading the mma podcasts to listen to on way to work - seems promising so far.

I am confused and yet intruigued about having a cell phone, Ipod, GPS, WiFi, a calculator, alarm system, and an ice cream maker all in one. MMMmmm ice cream... Just make sure the phone turns on before you walk out of the store, here in the states people were lining up for days for the darn thing and when they tried to turn it on, they found there was a glitch in the system...Oops. Student loans...cell phone...I would go for the cell phone...

attempting to silence the voices in my head.
